The Settings page's Roles tab provides the visibility and management of One95™ user roles. Roles control user access to platform functions and, if the 95 Literacy Intervention System™ (LIS) is enabled, student data views.
To learn more about role assignments, reference our article on One95™ Role Assignments.
95 Literacy Intervention System™
If your district has the 95 Literacy Intervention System™ (LIS) enabled in the One95 platform, the ability to view student data will be available.
The LIS is an assessment system in the One95 platform. This digital toolset empowers you to identify phonological awareness and phonics skill gaps, group students based on diagnostic assessment data, and deliver targeted instruction using recommended resources from the One95™ Literacy Ecosystem™. Individual student data is centralized to provide 360-degree visibility at the school and district levels, automating time-consuming workflows. With the LIS, students receive the help they need to move out of intervention and become successful readers.
Contact your main district contact to learn more about the LIS.
One95 Administrators have exclusive access to the Settings page where platform settings are configured.
Access the Roles tab by selecting Settings from the navigation panel and clicking Roles in the menu at the top of the page.
Roles Overview
Roles control user permissions and student data visibility in the platform.
User roles are used to map the district roles synchronized from your district’s rostering platform into One95 within the Settings page’s Connect tab.
- For districts without access to the LIS, every district role is mapped to the Teacher role during the initial One95 platform configuration.
- For districts with access to the LIS, every district role is mapped to the One95 role to which most of your district’s users need access.
From there, individual users are upgraded to One95 Administrators, downgraded to Teachers, or assigned to other roles within the Settings page's Licenses tab as needed.
Role Types
There are two role types in the One95 platform: default and custom.
- Default roles are the One95 roles provided to each district out of the box.
- Custom roles are the unique, district-specific roles that can be created to accommodate customized visibility into the platform.
Default Roles
There are nine default roles available in One95.
Two roles apply to all One95 users: Teacher and Administrator.
The LIS offers seven additional default roles: District, School, Grade, Reading Coach, Group Leader, Teacher No Groups, and Student. LIS roles determine how users can view and interact with student data within the platform.
Default roles can be viewed, duplicated, and mapped to when users are ingested into the system via your district’s rostering platform, but cannot be updated or deleted.
Custom Roles
Roles outside of the nine default roles are custom.
Custom roles may have been created by 95 Percent Group during onboarding or by other One95 Administrators in your district thereafter. They are created by duplicating default roles and modifying their permissions.
Custom roles can be viewed, updated, deleted, and mapped to when users are ingested into the system via your district’s rostering platform, but cannot be duplicated.
Students
When the LIS is enabled, student records are synchronized between One95 and your district’s rostering platform. The Student user role is displayed but disabled within the Roles tab, as students do not have access to One95.
Note: Students access Sortegories™ content via the student flipbook, which is distinct from the educator experience available in One95.
Rostered students are mapped to the Student user role by default in the Settings page's Connect tab during data synchronization. District roles cannot be mapped to the Student role.
Roles determine the scope of student data visible to each One95 user. One95 Administrators manage how student information is shared via role assignments.

Default Role Applications
Default roles reflect common sets of features for user groups typically encountered in K-12 schools.
Reference the “Set Access Abilities” section of this article to learn more about One95 page functions.
Administrator
One95 Administrators are all-access users, meaning they have access to every feature and function in the platform.
If the LIS is enabled, this user role has full data visibility, meaning they can view the data of all students and groups in the district.
It is important to exercise caution in provisioning this level of access.
Grouping
- This role has access to active groups across the district in the Groups page’s Active Groups tab.
- This role has access to students across the district during intervention cycle planning in the Groups page’s Setup New Intervention Cycle tab.
Settings
One95 Administrators have exclusive access to the Settings page and are holistically responsible for platform management. They can edit all options available on this page.
Within the Settings page, One95 Administrators oversee the following responsibilities:
- LIS settings

Roles Table
The Roles tab table contains three columns: ROLE, UPDATED, and MORE.
Role Column
The ROLE column displays both One95 default roles and any custom roles created by your district.
Every default role is visible in the ROLE column, regardless of whether your district has the LIS enabled. Non-LIS districts can disregard LIS roles.
Sorting
Sort roles in ascending or descending alphabetic order by clicking the ROLE column.
Updated Column
The UPDATED column displays the date on which roles were created or last updated in MM/DD/YY format.
- Non-LIS default roles reflect the date your district’s One95 instance was created.
- LIS default roles may reflect the date on which the LIS was enabled in your district’s One95 instance (if different than the non-LIS default roles dates).
- Custom roles either reflect the date on which they were created or last updated.
Sorting
Sort roles in ascending or descending date order of their creation or last update by clicking the UPDATED column.
More Column
The ellipsis icons within the MORE column allow roles to be viewed, updated, duplicated, and/or deleted. These abilities vary between default and custom roles.
- Default roles can be viewed or duplicated.
- Custom roles can be viewed, updated, or deleted.
Note the Student role displays a disabled ellipsis icon as it cannot be viewed, updated, duplicated, or deleted. This role is only visible if the LIS is enabled.
There are four options within the ellipsis icons drop-downs:
View Role
Click on a row's ellipsis icon and select View Role from the drop-down to view the role's access abilities and student data visibility within the platform.
The role name will be displayed at the top of the page under the Role Name section.

Expand Data Visibility
If the LIS is enabled, the Expand Data Visibility section outlines the students and groups to which the role has access. This section is read-only.
All users assigned to this role inherit the data scope visibility. Custom roles inherit the default role's permissions.
Student Data Scope on Today | My Students
Each role can either view their rostered and group-assigned students or all the students in the school within the Today page’s My Students tab.
Student Data Scope on Active Groups | All Students
Each role can either view their rostered and group-assigned students or all the students in the school within the Groups page's Active Groups tab.
Note:
- Users can see students that are not in their groups or classes if they are scheduled to administer an assessment to them.
- The Teacher No Groups role cannot access the Groups page.
Click Close to return to the Roles tab.
Update Role
Click on a row's ellipsis icon and select Update Role from the drop-down to update the custom role's name and/or access abilities.
Rename the user role within the Role Name field at the top of the page. Note custom roles cannot have the same name as default roles or existing custom roles.
The Duplicated from Role section next to the Role Name field displays the default role from which the custom role was duplicated.
The timestamp of when and which One95 Administrator created or last updated the role is displayed on the right-hand side of the Role Name field.
Mark or unmark the eligible Set Access Abilities checkboxes to modify the role’s permissions.
Note the Expand Data Visibility section is read-only.
Click Save once complete.
Duplicate Role
All default roles can be duplicated to add or remove grouping features.
For example:
- Create a duplicate role of School named “School No Groups,” which is like the Teacher No Groups role but includes the full school(s) student data scope.
- Create a duplicate role of School named “School W/O NIC,” which provides the same student data scope as the School role but limits access to the Setup New Intervention Cycle tab.
Click on the row’s ellipsis icon and select Duplicate Role from the drop-down to duplicate a default role and create a custom role. Custom roles cannot be duplicated.
Rename the user role within the Role Name field at the top of the page. Note custom roles cannot have the same name as default roles or existing custom roles.
Mark or unmark the eligible Set Access Abilities checkboxes to modify the role’s permissions.
- If a default role has the More Resources or Groups page privileges, these can be removed with a custom role.
- If a default role does not have the More Resources or Groups page privileges, these can be added with a custom role.
The custom role will inherit the default role’s data scope visibility outlined in the Expand Data Visibility section. This section is read-only.
Click Save once complete.
The custom role will be added to the bottom of the Roles table.
This role will be available as an option to map district roles within the Settings page’s Connect tab, and available for individual role assignments within the Settings page’s Licenses tab.

From there, use the Role drop-down to filter the district’s userbase by the custom role and ensure there are no users with the custom role assignment.
Once users have been reassigned roles as needed, return to the Roles tab and re-attempt to delete the custom role by clicking Delete Custom Role.
Click Ok within the Delete Role modal to confirm the custom role deletion. This action cannot be undone.
The custom role will be deleted from One95.
