What is PLL 2.0?

95 Phonics Lesson Library™ 2.0 (PLL 2.0) is an evidence-based program that enables educators to provide targeted, explicit intervention instruction for each student’s unique needs. Lessons include routine-based instruction and built-in practice opportunities spanning 75 discrete subskills across three levels: Basic, Advanced, and Multisyllable.

Districts can now choose from print and digital instruction options to fit their schools’ needs. PLL 2.0 offers new digital resources through the One95™ platform: Teacher Presentation Files (TPFs) and Student Activity Modules (SAMs).

SAMs are available if your district has the 95 Literacy Intervention System™ (LIS) enabled. The LIS and PLL 2.0 integrate to provide an end-to-end phonics intervention solution.

Contact your main district contact to learn more about the LIS.

What technology is needed to access SAMs? Do I need to download an app?

For districts with the LIS enabled, PLL 2.0 offers web-based SAMs, meaning educators and students will access their experiences online using the browser available on their digital devices.

No app download is required.

To learn more about accessing the PLL 2.0 digital components, reference our article on PLL 2.0 Technical Requirements.

What are TPFs?

For districts that choose the digital instruction option, Teacher Presentation Files (TPFs) will be one of educators’ primary tools. TPFs supplement the curriculum by providing no-prep visual teaching aides, enhancing instruction by digitizing the “I Do” and “We Do” stages of each lesson.

These files simplify modeling and practicing skills on laptops, projects, or interactive whiteboards during small-group instruction as educators work through the instructional dialogue.

For educators leveraging the digital Teacher’s Edition guides, it is advisable to open the Teacher’s Edition and TPF on separate devices. This setup allows educators to follow the instructional dialogue in the Teacher’s Edition while navigating the presentation for students.

What are SAMs?

Students apply their learning during the “You Do” stage of each lesson in supervised individual practice.

For districts with the LIS enabled, PLL 2.0 offers Student Activity Modules (SAMs) as a digital alternative to using physical manipulatives within each day of the five-day lesson.

SAMs are fully digital manipulative kits that remove the need for prep and cleanup and surface valuable completion data for educator visibility across the school.

Yellow bars denote opportunities to use the SAMs for student manipulative work within the Teacher’s Edition guides.

To use SAMs, educators need enough laptops or tablets for their five small-group students. Since SAMs are teacher-directed, educators will find instructions to share with students within the lesson.

Students will bring their devices to small group time, log in to the One95 student flipbook, and complete SAMs directly at the table. SAMs are assigned by educators from the Assign Student Activities page in the One95 platform in advance, and activity progress is monitored from there.

How are the TPFs different than the SAMs?

Although the Teacher Presentation Files (TPFs) illustrate the activities for the “I Do” and “We Do” stages of each lesson and closely mimic the SAMs, they do not capture the specific steps for completing the digital activities, such as dragging and dropping the phonics chips or using the SAM menu icons.

TPFs are like PowerPoint presentations, while SAMs are fully interactive.

Because of this, it is advisable for educators to model the SAMs and walk students through the functionality when they are used for the first time. SAMs are previewed from the Assign Student Activities page.

Where do I go to manage SAM assignments?

Educators can manage SAM assignments and track student progress from the Assign Student Activities page.

Access the Assign Student Activities page by selecting Activities from the navigation panel.

How do I assign and unassign SAMs?

A subskill is the unit to which you can assign students for PLL 2.0 literacy practice.

Subskills are assigned from the Assign Student Activities page. The assignments made here determine which SAMs students can access within the student flipbook.

The table columns represent the subskills related to the skill selected in the Skip To drop-down. Select from Skill 2 through Skill 15. Only one skill can be viewed at a time.

Subskill columns must be expanded before assignments can be managed. Click the triangle icons in the bottom right-hand corner of each subskill column to expand them.

Subskills can be assigned or unassigned individually and in bulk.

Assigning Subskills

To individually assign a subskill, click the closed-eye icon within the student’s row. Picture, Picture

After selection, the closed-eye icon will be replaced by an open-eye icon highlighted in green, indicating the subskill is available for practice in the student's flipbook.

To assign a subskill to all students displayed in the table, click the closed-eye icon within the desired subskill column

Click Yes, Please Continue to confirm.

After selection, the closed-eye icons will be replaced by open-eye icons highlighted in green, indicating the subskill is available for practice in the students’ flipbooks.

Note: Subskills are automatically unassigned after being assigned to students for 21 calendar days. This helps educators manage active subskill assignments and ensures students have a limited number of subskills available in their flipbooks.

Unassigning Subskills

To individually unassign a subskill, click the open-eye icon in the student’s row. Picture, Picture

After selection, the open-eye icon will be replaced by a closed-eye icon, indicating the subskill is no longer assigned to the student and has been removed from their flipbook.

To unassign a subskill from all students displayed in the table, click the open-eye icon within the desired subskill column.

Click Yes, Please Continue to confirm.

After selection, the open-eye icons will be replaced by closed-eye icons, indicating the subskill is no longer assigned to the students and has been removed from their flipbooks.

How do I model the SAMs?

SAMs can be modeled by clicking the ellipsis icon within expanded subskill columns on the Assign Student Activities page.

Once Preview Student Activity Module has been selected, the day-by-day breakdown will be displayed in a new browser tab.

Select a day tile to view the SAMs related to each lesson day.

SAMs will be displayed as tiles. Select a SAM tile to open the activity.

Click START to launch the SAM.

Note:

  • Activity progress and completion data will not be saved.
  • The student flipbook cannot be accessed from the Assign Student Activities page.

To learn more about navigating SAMs, reference our article on PLL 2.0 Student Activity Modules.

How do students access SAMs?

Students must log in to their district’s rostering platform and select the One95 Literacy Platform tile from the dashboard. They will arrive at the student flipbook.

The student flipbook houses students' assigned subskills.

How do I know which SAMs have been assigned to a student?

Subskills will be dynamically presented on the student flipbook homepage as educators assign and unassign them.

In the example below, the student is assigned Subskill 2.1, Subskill 2.2, and Subskill 2.3, meaning the SAMs related to these lessons are available for practice.

In the example below, the student is not currently assigned to any subskills.

How do I know when a SAM is considered complete?

Students must reach the designated criteria within their assigned SAMs for the activity to be considered complete.

Completed SAMs will appear green when reviewing students’ activity progress from the Assign Student Activities page.

Navy SAMs indicate the activity has been opened but not completed.

Gray SAMs indicate the activity has not been opened. This is the default state.
