What is Sortegories™?
Sortegories™ is a teacher-directed tool that provides practice in essential literacy skills by using the science of how we learn to read and what to practice including reading and spelling, word meaning, and/or comprehension.
Sortegories includes three levels: A, B, and C. Each level contains six modules based on its phonics scope and sequence. Nine activities per module make it simple to practice skills from sounds to syntax.
Built-in instructional support and immediate corrective feedback make Sortegories an ideal tool for independent student practice. Students have fun celebrating their success by feeding a virtual animal of their choice. Correct answers will be applied to donations to help animals in need.
What technology is needed to access Sortegories? Do I need to download an app?
Sortegories is a web-based practice tool, meaning educators and students will access their experiences online using the browser available on their digital devices. No app download is required.
Browser pop-ups must be enabled for one95.app to access the student flipbook.
It is advisable to use Google Chrome, Firefox, and Safari web browsers.
To learn more about accessing Sortegories, reference our article on Sortegories™ Technical Requirements.
How is Sortegories commonly used?
Levels target the skills students need based on their individual performance data from core instruction, such as the 95 Phonics Core Program® (PCP).
Levels are grade-agnostic but frequently used as follows.
- Level A is used across kindergarten and Grade 1 classrooms and for older students in intervention.
- Level B is used across Grade 1 and Grade 2 classrooms and for older students in intervention.
- Level C is used across Grade 2 and Grade 3 classrooms and for older students in intervention.
Legacy Sortegories users should note Level C is a brand-new Sortegories level available as part of the One95™ experience.
How do I know which modules have been assigned to a student?
Once students have logged in to their district’s rostering platform and selected the One95 Literacy Platform tile from the dashboard, they will arrive at the student flipbook. The student flipbook houses students’ available Sortegories modules.
Modules will be dynamically presented on the flipbook homepage as educators assign and unassign modules.
In the example below, the student is assigned Modules 1 and 2 of Level A.
How do I know how a student is progressing with Sortegories?
Once students select a module from the flipbook homepage, the 3x3 activity grid is displayed.
Activity names slightly differ between levels. In the example above, Level A is shown.
Ribbons will populate the 3x3 grid as the student progresses through the module with a score of at least 80%.
- 80-89% earns a gold ribbon.
- 90-99% earn gold and red ribbons.
- 100% earns gold, red, and blue ribbons.
Note there are two sets of ribbon criteria within Sortegories.
Students receive a ribbon at the end of each activity if they scored 80% or above.
- 80-89% earns a gold ribbon.
- 90-99% earn a red ribbon.
- 100% earns a blue ribbon.
The results screen allows students to view their item-specific activity performance and print the results. The ribbon earned will be displayed on this page.
How do students skip the activity intro animation and/or instructions?
Students that are familiar with an activity can skip past the opening animation and instructions to immediately launch their practice.
- Skip the opening animation by clicking anywhere on the screen as it plays.
- Bypass the instruction and example walkthroughs by clicking the Skip button that appears at the bottom of the screen.
How do I help students access the built-in instructional help?
Sortegories offers point-of-use help specific to each activity in the upper right-hand corner. Activities may feature one or multiple icons related to the available support.
Examples
The example icon provides the ability to replay the help tutorial.
Glossaries
The glossary icon provides a visual glossary with audio help to support learning word meanings. The glossaries clarify the meaning intended for the activity.
Heart Words
The heart icon provides access to review and practice “heart words.”
Heart words are high-frequency words that contain an irregularity that does not fit any learned pattern.
Instructional Support
The question mark icon provides instructional support, helping students with unfamiliar concepts and teachers’ learning of reading science.
Word Study
The speech bubble icon provides activity topic support (e.g., schwas, syllables).
I am a teacher, and I have the LIS. How do I make groups for Sortegories?
